Rough cut

Audience feedback is important to a production because they gain gain some good constructive criticism which they can use to make the film better. This is also important as they can find out more about what the target audience want from the film so can add in better features and ideas. A rough cut is essential to carry out because it allows the production to get feedback and make improvements. This is important as it means the film can be made much better and more conventional to the genre.

My group received audience feedback from the target audience by uploading the sequence to youtube and also screening it in the classroom. By uploading the thriller to youtube, it allowed us to get feedback from the general public  and also anyone that was part of our target audience. This was good as it meant we gained helpful, constructive criticism from people we did not know which made it all the more useful to us. This will benefit the production as it means we can use the feedback to make improvements on our sequence which will make it more conventional to the thriller genre. By screening it in the classroom, it meant that the people giving us feedback were of the same age group as the target audience so we knew they would give good feedback. Also, as they are doing a thriller sequence as well, they know what would make our thriller more conventional so could give useful feedback to make it better. This will benefit the production as it means that when it gets improved, it will definitely be more conventional to the thriller genre as the feedback was from people that knew about the thriller genre.

Below is one of the comments we received on youtube. The positive part of this comment tells us that the sounds were conventional and built suspense. This is good as it makes us feel proud of what we have created. However, the criticism given is about the acting which we are unable to work on because we are not marked on the acting just on the film and editing. As result, this is one thing we will not be able to change but we can look back at other clips we filmed and see if we have anything better that we can put in instead. Also, there is criticism about the lighting which we can work on but this is obviously important because it is also mentioned in the 2nd comment below. To reflect and improve this we can edit the lighting on Final Cut Pro X and make it dimmer. We can use the brightness bar and move it up or down to make it specific to that scene. We will especially make it darker and creepier when the victim and antagonist are down the alley way as this is what the audience have said they would like to see. On the 2nd comment below, it also tells us that we build up suspense well and and create tension for the audience. This is important as we know that we do not need to work on this as the audience enjoy it already.

The comment below gives some good constructive criticism as it tells us that one of our sounds doesn't fit in to the genre of the film. However, the reason we used this sound was because it was a contrapuntal sound which is happier than the suspenseful music. By using this sound it shows how the antagonist puts on a clown mask and doesn't care about killing his victim. So, as the audience obviously don't find this sound conventional and they don't believe it sounds right, we will change the sound to improve it. Instead, we will use a more suspenseful sound to build up tension which will make it much more conventional to the thriller genre. Therefore, our film will attract a bigger audience as we know that it is more conventional to the thriller genre.
The final comment which is below tells us that they enjoyed the sequence and especially thought that the editing was good. This shows that we did well at adding in effects and features to the sequence. However, there is also some constructive criticism said as well. This tells us that more shots and angles could be used to make it more conventional to the thriller genre. The problem with this criticism is that we are now unable to add more shots because this would mean refilming which we cannot do as we had a deadline that needed to be met. Due to this it meant that we only had time to edit and not refilm. If we had time to refill, we would probably add in more long shots for example which would mean we can show more scenery to set the scene.
Conclusion

Our production would benefit in the film industry by using the rough cut because it means we can receive good feedback that we can use to improve the sequence and make it better. By using the rough cut, it also means we can find out what else the target audience want from the film to make it more interesting for them so that they will want to stay engaged in the rest of the thriller film. The film industry would benefit from these comments as it helps them to know the main parts of the film which need working on and the parts which don't as the audience already enjoy them parts.
